Rexy brushes aside calls to quit after Malaysia miss Asiad target

Rexy Mainaky, Malaysia's national doubles coaching director, has said he will keep doing his job even though some fans want him to step down. The calls came after the badminton squad missed its medal target at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Malaysia came home with a single bronze, won by women's doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah. That was the country's first Asian Games medal in the event since Incheon 2014, but it fell short of Rexy's target of at least one silver and one bronze. Much of the criticism has focused on the decision to break up Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik and pair Aaron with Tee Kai Wun. The new pair went out in the second round to world No. 1 Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae.

Rexy said critics are entitled to their opinions and declined to say more. The Badminton Association of Malaysia's high-performance setup is now under closer scrutiny heading into 2027.
