Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim book World Junior semi-final and guarantee Malaysia a medal

Malaysia still has a medal within reach at the World Junior Championships in Cairo after Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim stormed into the girls’ doubles semi-finals. The pair needed only 22 minutes to dismiss Hong Kong’s Au-yeung Wing Chi and Chu Wing Chi 15-7, 15-7 in the quarter-finals at the Cairo International Stadium, locking in at least a bronze for the country.

They will meet China’s Shi Sichen and Xiang Yujin in the semi-finals on Friday. Zi Yu and Genevie are Malaysia’s sole remaining semi-finalists after boys’ doubles second seeds Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim and Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal were knocked out by Japan’s Oku Mahiro and Masato Yamashiro 15-7, 11-15, 9-15.

It was a tough day for Redzuan overall: he and Zi Yu, the top-seeded mixed doubles pair, also lost in the third round to South Korea’s Jeong Seong-been and Kim Min-chae. Attention now turns to whether Zi Yu and Genevie can push past China and chase gold or silver in Cairo.
